Interlochen Elementary School Nature Trail
Easy, family-orientated, 15-20 minutes
Placed by Esperanza
As you take Hwy. 31 and head south into the town of
Interlochen (on the way to the music camp) you will pass the Interlochen
elementary school on the left hand side of the road. The nature
trail begins also on the left just past the school. Bring bug
spray.
The trail begins with a fork, bear to the right. The
trail has numbered posts. After post #8 (which is in front of a birch
growing from an old stump with a 2-trunked oak tree on the left) look to
the left side of the trail for 2 small 2-trunked trees with 2 small
pines between them. Walk into the forest and stand to the right of the
small pines. As you stand in line with these trees, take a compass bearing
of 110 degrees. Take 45 paces straight ahead on this bearing. This
will bring you to an oak directly at your right and a branchy pine
straight ahead. Peek around the front of the oak and take a compass
bearing of 160 degrees. Take 15 paces on that heading to an old rotting
stump, find the box. After stamping in, please be sure to completely
re-hide the box with bark and leaves. As you look about notice the stump
is in a nice glade of trees with a very large pine to the SE and a maple to the
E and several oaks. You'll also notice many old stumps, remnants of the
logging industry long ago.
